About Judge Baxter Sharp:

Judge Baxter Sharp of Brinkley is running for the newly created judicial position of District Judge, District 16, Division 1, covering all of Monroe and Arkansas Counties. Judge Sharp currently serves as Monroe County District Court Judge, Clarendon and Holly Grove Divisions by appointment of Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Judge Sharp retired in 2022 as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney after over 23 years of service. He currently serves as Brinkley City Attorney. Sharp has also been in private practice at Sharp & Sharp, P. A. in Brinkley for over 30 years representing clients in civil, corporate, domestic relations, and probate matters.  He practiced criminal defense work prior to being appointed Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in 1998.

Judge Sharp received his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law, Fayetteville, Arkansas; and his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia.

  • Chairman of Merchants and Planters Bank, Clarendon

  • Chairman of the Monroe County Community Foundation

  • Co-Trustee of the Folsom Memorial Library, Brinkley

  • Co-Trustee of the Jewel Minnis Trust (managing a farm near Roe to provide scholarships for first year students in the University of Arkansas system)

  • Treasurer of the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Foundation

  • Brinkley Chamber of Commerce (Citizen of the Year)

  • Arkansas Community Foundation (Lugene Chilcote Award and the Gene Staton Award)

  • Arkansas Bar Association (twice for its Distinguished Service Award, and its Frank Elcan Award)

  • Arkansas Business (“40 Under 40”).

About the District 16 Judge Position:

There will be two judges elected for District 16.  Those judges will preside over the district courts in Arkansas and Monroe Counties.  District courts have jurisdiction over traffic violations, misdemeanor offenses, city ordinance violations, etc.; small claims up to $5,000.00 in controversy, and civil cases up to $25,000.00 in controversy; cases as assigned by the Circuit Court (such as forcible entry, protective orders, unlawful detainer, and matters of emergency or uncontested nature); and preliminary felony matters.
